There is a lot of truth when they say that prevention is a lot better than cure. However, despite having more preventive care measures nowadays, the number of chronic diseases and those plagued by it is also increasing. This means that something must be done to increase preventive care measures across the borders.

If you are interested in knowing more about preventive care measures and how it could be increased, then you have come to the right page. In this article, you will learn about the different levels of preventive care measures and how they could be integrated better.

What is Preventive Care?

Preventive healthcare, also known as prophylaxis, is composed of measures undertaken for disease prevention. Diseases and disabilities are affected mainly by the Withoutenvironment, disease agents, genetic, and lifestyle factors.

The importance of preventive healthcare is increasing each year, given that the prevalence of chronic diseases is also on the rise. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, about 55 million individuals died in 2011 due to non-communicable diseases such as cancer, chronic cardiovascular and lung diseases, and diabetes. This is an over 60% increase of the figures from 2000.

Levels of Preventive Care

Preventive healthcare methods are categorized into three levels, primary, secondary, and tertiary.

  • Primary Prevention

This level of prevention helps mitigate the early onset of chronic diseases by reducing the risk factors for its development. One specific type of primary prevention is minimizing the risks by changing behaviors and mitigating exposures. For example, cardiovascular diseases risk can be reduced by switching to a healthier eating diet and active lifestyle.

Vaccinations are also considered primary preventive measures as they improve resistance against disease exposure. This is the main reason why children are recommended childhood vaccines to prevent polio, hepatitis, measles, etc.

  • Secondary Prevention

The secondary level of preventive healthcare involves detecting and treating the disease at its early stage. At this level, the first step is to conduct procedures that lead to earlier detection and more cost-effective intervention options.

  • Tertiary Prevention

Lastly, the tertiary prevention level focuses on arresting, delaying, or reversing diseases in the clinical realm. Its goal is to mitigate the impact of the disease on the patient's quality of life. At this level of preventive care measures, patients have more interactions with medical professionals and the healthcare system as a whole.

Methods on How to Increase Preventive Care Measures

  • Invest More on Information Drives

One of the biggest obstacles when it comes to preventive care measures is lack of information. Without knowing what these are for and how these can help improve life quality, people are more likely to neglect it. This is why, to increase preventive care measures, more information should be provided to health care professionals and the public.

Information drives can be done at various levels. It can start small at a community level by educating residents about it. At the same time, it can also be done at a national level by partnering with state organizations to ensure that the message is heard across the borders.

  • Increase Visibility

Another method that will help increase preventive care measures is by being more visible. This recommendation is highly connected with the one mentioned above because the more people who are aware of these measures, the more effective this can be.

Making preventive care measures more visible can be done in many different ways. One traditional but still effective way of doing so is by providing leaflets and putting posters. However, using social media to convey preventive care measures to a wider audience is also an option for a more modern approach.

  • Earn a Degree in Healthcare Administration

This program helps students prepare for non-clinical leadership roles in the healthcare industry. This program focuses more on strategic human resources management, health policies, improving healthcare quality, and many more.
